Reactive filters for large-scale wastewater treatment
Ecofiltration’s reactive filter material can be used for large-scale wastewater removal of phosphorus, particularly when existing solutions and infrastructures require robust and maintenance-free technology. Filter materials can be applied or combined in different basins, tanks or containers depending on the part of the process in which the technology is installed. Requirements for removal, water quantity, surface effect, exchange interval and logistical challenges determine the size of the filters. Different filter materials can also be combined, depending on the removal requirement.
Large-scale phosphorus filters – polishing
Ecofiltration’s phosphorus filters bind up to 100% of phosphorus and are a natural alternative to chemical precipitation, particularly in smaller treatment plants where it is not possible to use chemicals. These filters can achieve very low phosphorus removal levels of 0.1 – 0.3 mg/l in the outgoing water. The most effective solution is a filter for smaller treatment plants with a requirement of 0.5 – 5 mg/l of phosphorus removal. A phosphorus filter is integrated at the end of the treatment process as a mobile or permanent installation with existing basins where possible.

There are two possible alternatives for treatment of sludge. A phosphorus filter can be used to collect phosphorus from the reject water which is high in phosphorus concentration, following sludge dewatering and polishing. Alternatively, the sludge can be treated with a fine-grain filter material for stabilization and thickening as an alternative to lime and certain polymers. The filter material can also bind up to 12% of its own weight. Such high content levels significantly increase the value of the final product, which can be used directly as soil improvement material.

The filter material has very good bacteria-reducing properties due to the material’s high initial pH value and specific surface. 99.99% of undesired pathogens are reduced initially and the filter is well-suited for removal plants that require a simple solution with high hygienic capabilities. The filter simultaneously reduces bacteria and collects phosphorus. In other words, it provides two benefits in one.
Overflow filter with complete wastewater treatment
All water treatment plants have overflow points in the treatment plant itself and in the sewer network where large flows of untreated water are transported due to climate change and flooding. Most water treatment plants do not purify this water, which means that it is released into the environment completely untreated. With a reactive filter, phosphorus can be collected before it is released and the collected material can be used beneficially for soil improvement.
Odor treatment with OdorAway
Ecofiltration also offers a very effective odor filter called OdorAway, which can neutralize hydrogen sulfide from pump stations or similar applications. OdorAway is significantly more effective than active carbon and far superior to biological filters such as bark; a very small amount is needed to achieve the same results and the filter lasts longer. Then the saturation filter can be mixed, for example, with construction soil and recycled.
